Isabel Guillen-Mendez, MD, has joined Wheeler’s Family Health & Wellness Centers, providing psychiatric services in Bristol.

A graduate of Universidad Central del Caribe, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and Boston College, with a neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology fellowship at Stanford University, Dr. Guillen-Mendez also has extensive experience in emergency psychiatric care, inpatient psychiatric settings, and clinical care ranging from pediatrics to geriatric patients.

She has specific interests in Huntington’s Disease, care in multilingual patients, holistic approaches to schizophrenia care, neurodegenerative disorders including cognitive disorders and movement disorders, interventional psychiatry, and hypnosis as a treatment modality for Functional Neurologic Disorders.

At Wheeler, she also completed certification in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a non-invasive, drug-free therapy for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

“While in medical school I remember wanting to apply to either psychiatry or surgery, and when it came down to making a decision, psychiatry felt right and made the most sense to me,” she says. “I have always been fascinated by behavioral issues, mental health diagnoses, and reducing the stigma associated with these. Then, during my residency and fellowship, I had the "aha" moment of my career that psychiatry was absolutely the right choice.”

“Dr. Guillen-Mendez is the kind of physician I would want,” said Michael Twist, DO, Wheeler’s psychiatric medical director. “She brings a genuine, caring approach to every patient, and has the kind of kindness and intelligence that everyone deserves in their care.”
