November 20, 2025

Janiza is currently studying community psychology with a concentration in forensics at the University of New Haven and will graduate in May 2026. Originally from New Haven, she brings a deep connection to her community and a strong desire to make an impact.

During her internship, Janiza is working with the Alternative in the Community (AIC) program in Middletown, where she assists with urine analyses, breathalyzer screenings, case management, and more. These responsibilities give her direct experience working with individuals in the criminal justice system and help her better understand the support structures needed for successful rehabilitation.

Janiza was drawn to Wheeler because of its deep commitment to serving underrepresented populations.
This internship marries her personal commitment while supporting her career goals. One day, she hopes to work in a correctional facility and provide therapy and help individuals rebuild their lives. She brings a compassionate, collaborative, and open-minded approach to her work. She believes “everyone deserves a spotlight” and brings an optimistic energy that gives others hope. Her ability to listen to different perspectives and her strong teamwork skills make her a valuable addition to the Wheeler community.

Janiza is a first-generation college student whose family is originally from Puerto Rico. She is one of six siblings—two sisters and three brothers—and falls right in the middle of the family lineup.
