Wheeler Health Welcomes New Cohort of Interns

September 25, 2025

Wheeler Health is proud to introduce its 2025 Internship Program, running from September 2025 through April 2026. This year, interns in behavioral health fields are joining teams across Wheeler.

The long-running program offers students hands-on, real-world experience in integrated health care, reinforcing Wheeler’s mission to provide compassionate, whole-person care that addresses both physical and behavioral health needs. Interns are paired with dedicated staff mentors, gaining exposure to a wide variety of populations and services, while building the skills and confidence to step into future professional roles.

A Focus on Behavioral Health
Our 50 behavioral health interns play an especially important role, supporting intensive outpatient programs, group therapy, patient care coordination, and more. They not only learn from seasoned clinicians but also bring new energy, perspectives, and commitment to serving the community.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight two of our behavioral health Bristol interns: Alyssa Lacy and Riley O’Hanlon, both students at Central Connecticut State University.

Alyssa, from East Hartford, is completing her bachelor’s degree in social work and will graduate in December 2025. At Wheeler, she’s already immersed in shadowing group therapy sessions, supporting intensive outpatient treatments, and coordinating patient care.

“I wanted to try something new and really experience the clinical side of social work,” Alyssa shared. Her goal during the internship is to gain as much experience as possible across different populations, building a well-rounded foundation for her career. Ultimately, Alyssa hopes to work in the private sector with adolescents and children, a passion that aligns closely with what she looks forward to most at Wheeler: working with kids and adolescents.

Organized and people-oriented, Alyssa also enjoys research and thrives behind the scenes. And outside Wheeler and school, she loves to travel. Already has visited 15 countries, Curacao being her favorite.

Riley O'Hanlon_01.webpMeet Riley O’Hanlon
Riley, a Bristol native, is pursuing her master’s degree in professional clinical counseling, graduating in spring 2026. She received her undergraduate psychology degree at the University of Hartford. She was inspired by a friend of the family, who also interned at Wheeler’s Plainville location, and connected deeply with Wheeler’s mission, especially our commitment to integrity.

“I really enjoy merging the physical aspects of health with the mental aspects,” Riley explained. She brings to Wheeler a belief that what manifests physically can also manifest mentally, a perspective that helps her approach clients holistically.

During her internship, Riley is focused on steady growth: “I want to be 1% better every day.” She’s eager to build professional connections, network, and develop new skills in an upbeat environment.

Outside of her studies and clinical work, Riley has a unique background as a competitive gymnast, a discipline that taught her perseverance and balance, qualities she brings to her work with patients.

Building the Next Generation of Care
Interns like Alyssa and Riley embody the future of behavioral health care. Their dedication, curiosity, and compassion not only enrich their own professional development but also make a meaningful impact on the individuals and families served by Wheeler Health.

Through this internship program, Wheeler strengthens its mission of care that goes beyond treatment, empowering individuals, families, and communities to thrive.
